Summer

We spent a Saturday at K.'s camp near Omaha. She gave us a micro-mini-taste-of-camp.


After VBS and the ice cream social, spent a few days catching up .....no, make that ATTEMPTING to catch up...... on bookwork, housework, laundry, etc. Then we went to Hutch to visit Mom/Granny Fran for a few days.


Except it didn't seem like very long of a visit to me, because I spent two of those days going to Wichita to take another class.



Did get a visit to the zoo worked in before we left.









Got home Saturday night just a little bit before K. arrived home for a four-day break. She got to play (organ) for church today. Always love to hear her play. T. got home last week, and will be off from work at camp till later in July. This evening she started back for a couple of weeks at her job milking cows.

So summer has officially been here for just over a week now, but it really feels like it's half over. I like these evenings when the sun goes down so late. And of course around this time of year we can go outside, look off toward the horizon in about any direction, and enjoy the fireworks displays for which others have shelled out the cash! We set off a few of our own, but nothing very elaborate. Enjoy some games of croquet, with B. known for setting up varying lengths of courses.

And as long as there's some light (or even sometimes if there's not?) M. is always ready to get a kite, or two, or more, up in the air! More about those another time.
Have had a bit of a lull with the garden. Maybe that's because we've been gone?! But B. did bring in a cucumber today, so it will soon be time for making pickles.

VBS week

It's Vacation Bible School Week. (I'm director this year.) The program will be Sunday morning. Then the youth group is having their annual ice cream social that evening. Meaning..... I'll update sometime AFTER this week!

Oh, but before I forget--I was helping a little boy scrub a very stubborn, sticky, gluey, play-doughy mess off of his hands after craft time. He looked up at me and asked, "Are you a grandma?"

I took that as a compliment!

Hey, Sarah Sisters! Welcome to my blog! You gals are awesome--I don't know what I'd do without the monthly boost of endorphins at our circle meetings! : ) And Kathy..... we are SO HAPPY for you!!!

The class I took in Kansas City was for hours toward keeping my teaching certificate current. Don't know if I'll ever get back in a classroom of my own, but don't want to let the certificate lapse in case I do. This class was called "Birth Order, Gender, and Creativity" for whatever it was worth! The Ottawa University classes are the way to go, for sure! They are compacted into 2 or 3 days, instead of dragging out all through a semester.

When class was over Friday, I swung over and got T. (and ALL her dirty camp laundry!) for a couple of nights at home. It was a joy to have her around, then on Sunday it was back to her junior counselor job. She hadn't seen Molly's new kittens yet.

Aunt Betty passed away the end of May. I remember fun times and good food at her home. When we visited Osborne relatives, I would stay there at the farm with my cousin, Janet, instead of in town with the rest of the family. That meant even more time Aunt Betty had to put up with our silliness!

Don't know if I had mentioned that we had a second setting of eggs. They hatched out right around T's birthday. This chick is called "Golden". We also had "Early Bird" (hatched 3 days before the others!) and Nerdy (an odd grayish color, and the other chicks really did seem to shun him.) They are getting quite grown now, hard to tell apart, and all settled in their chicken coop.

I'm in K.C. at my brother's. They have a wonderful bed and breakfast here! : ) Works out great for me when I take two day classes through Ottawa University here. More about that another time.

Speaking of K.C....... Karen C., it was great to get a comment from you!! Oh, but I about didn't find it, since you left it on my earliest post instead of the most recent. : ) That's okay--I'll take comments anywhere any of you want to leave them! Thank you to those of you who have left them.

I'll try to get back to this sometime next week. Not that there will be more time....... just that now that I've said that I'll have a deadline to meet. Does anyone else seem to get things done better if there's a deadline?

Fruits and Veggies

Summer must be here. The produce is producing, and the freezer is freezing a new supply of veggies. So far I've put in several bags of asparagus, in addition to enjoying it fresh several times. Probably have a dozen and a half bags of broccoli frozen. And...... we have fresh strawberries! Yummy!!! So far we don't have enough to freeze any, but hopefully there will be. (The birds like the strawberries too. Grrr! But M. and B. put some netting over the patch, so that discourages them some.)

Things are different. Both girls are off to their respective camp jobs. It's different.

Hot

Yes, I'm done with school for the year. (well, not LIKELY I'll be called in for the final 1/2 day tomorrow morning) I figure that I averaged two days per week subbing.

So why does the temperature have to change so abruptly to HOT?! Don't know why I said that--cause I like cold even less. Which brings me to....... why do stores, offices, etc. insist on keeping their air conditioners turned down to FREEZING?! Cool is fine, but when you get goose bumps just walking in, that's ridiculous!

K. and her FULL carload of stuff got home Thursday. : )
She leaves tomorrow. : (

T.'s last day of school is tomorrow. : )
She leaves Friday. : (

I'm sure both of them are thinking : ) though, since they're heading for camp and the staff training that precedes it. K. will be working with Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries as a counselor at Camp Carol Joy Holling, Sullivan Hills Camp, and/or one of 28 day camps. Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries (then click on "Summer Camp") She'll be with them through July.

T. will be a junior counselor near Junction City (Camp Tomah Shinga) through the 3rd week of June, and maybe one in July, depending on their registration numbers.

I know they'll have great times!

B. and M. are spending lots of hours getting milo, corn, and soybeans in the ground.

Niece Katie brought her kids up to Karen and Terry's this week. We got to spend some time with them last evening. Elijah is such a little gentleman! His twin sisters are almost 4 months now, and doing great after the hard start they had. These pictures are from when we saw them in Hutch in early April. Katie and Ron--you have a lovely family!

Another post

It's only been approximately a week since I posted, but it seems a long time, so much has happened and we've covered so many miles.

OH CHEESECAKE! That's what this was supposed to be. Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake at that! Here's a clue--make sure you have all the ingredients, read all the way through the recipe, and have plenty of time so you don't try to hurry things along by trying to cool the crust in the freezer where it will Fall Out All Over the Floor when you go to take it out! (As it turned out, I went to plan B and used store-bought pie crusts, which in turn meant I had to make more filling. At any rate, the ladies at my circle meeting said the final project tasted great!)

Saturday morning, May 8, B, M, T, and I were headed to Hutchinson to visit Mom and enjoy an organ rededication service (which was very nice!) at First Presbyterian on Sunday. Well, on the way to Hutch, Mom called to let us know that Aunt Lela had just died. It was all very sudden.

T. had to be back Monday for school and a track meet, plus we picked up some of K's stuff at Bethany--you know.....a small Christmas tree and decorations, CD player/radio, etc. etc.--and brought it on home Sunday evening.

B, M, and I headed back to Hutch Monday morning. Aunt Lela's memorial service was that afternoon. In addition to other relatives, eight of eleven DeMoss cousins were able to be there! We shared good memories of Aunt Lela! She was quite the world traveler, and always brought souvenirs for her nieces and nephews. Did I mention birthdays? I don't think she Ever forgot to send a birthday card!

It was back home again on Tuesday. Subbed Wed. and Thursday afternoons. Can't do that tomorrow. Have a couple of events coming up on Saturday that I'm Not Ready for yet!!!!! Imagine that!

Ok, so it really isn't hard to put pictures on here I guess. Just had to find my way around. I'll start with three pictures of the Easter chicks.

We call this one Chickweed. He was the first or second to hatch, and is definitely bigger than the rest.
