I Wasn't Alone

Thought I'd get some pictures of the wild phlox that we encouraged to grow in our garden. As I zoomed in for some close-ups of the petals, I realized there were at least three kinds of butterflies, plus a buzzy friend, also enjoying them!

Let's Go Fly a Kite!

Here are some of the kites that M. flies. The rest of us fly them too, but it's mainly his hobby.

"Circles around the Sun"
"About Face!"

"Ever Higher"
"Setting in the Sunset"

"Right On!"

"Dizzy!"

"Follow the Leader"
"Powerful"

"Hold on!"

Springtime Veggie

Asparagus--love the stuff--maybe because it's the first vegetable available in our garden each spring! Fresh steamed is best, but now we get enough that I can put some in the freezer to enjoy later.

What's to say?

I keep thinking about Greensburg.

The town where we go to school, get parts, check out books, buy groceries, etc. is smaller than Greensburg. As we came home from the spring music program this evening, I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like for the entire town to be destroyed in a matter of minutes. Not a fun thought.

We trust.
We pray.
We do what we can to stay safe.
We pray.
We trust.

May Day-Lilacs

In my memory, May Day means lilacs. There was a huge lilac bush (anyway it seemed huge to me) growing by the front porch where we lived when I was in grade school. I'd clip off sprigs of it to fill May Baskets (Dixie Cups covered with foil, I think) to take next door to Mrs. Younger and across the street to Mrs. Matthews. Hang the basket on the doorknob, knock or ring a doorbell, try to hide, .....

When we moved to a bigger town, we still had lilacs, and also when we moved out of town.

When B and I got married, there were lilacs growing out back.

This year, for the first time I can remember, there haven't been any lilacs blooming nearby. The hard freeze in April took care of that. Ah well, next year they will be appreciated even more!

200 Brownies!

Quiz time--
How many boxes of brownie mix does it take to provide 200 individually wrapped brownies for the local bank for their open house? (Hint: each box says it makes 20 brownies)

Why would we be making 200 brownies?--
We're raising funds for T's trip to California this summer.

And why, you ask, is T going to California?--
It all started with her STAR event for FCCLA, which involved raising money for the American Cancer Society. She did this by starting a seasonal business (Nov. and Dec.) selling "Gifts in a Jar" (mixes for cocoa, spiced tea, and 3 kinds of cookies).

She earned Gold in her STAR event category at the district level, and then Top Gold at the state competition, so now she gets to present her project at the national level in July! She, her advisor, and seven other girls will be going, so there will be multiple fund-raising events (Mother's Day breakfast, concessions at Summerfest, .....) until then.

Anyway, the bank needed the brownies, and FCCLA advisor sent the business our way. (Thanks!)

Quiz answer--
If you said 10 boxes of brownie mix, sorry, that is incorrect. The correct answer is eleven! After all, the first batch in the old, dented 9 x 13 pan came out uneven (before relying only on the sturdy, insulated pan), so some of the brownies were much too thin and/or dry. And surely you knew that we would have to have at least Some extras for sampling!

A favorite verse

"I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being." Psalm 104:33

In keeping with that,
I sang a special number at church this morning--"Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks!"

They changed!

It was just a year ago that we had chicks hatching out. Remember how cute they were? (I tried to make a direct link here to a previous post, but haven't figured out how yet. So if you want to see the chick pictures again, you'll have to go to Archives on the sidebar, and find the May 3, 2006 and June 12, 2006 posts) Here's how some of those "chicks" looked by last fall. The hens took a hiatus during part of the winter, but I think they're all laying again now, as we get around a dozen eggs a day.

Some of our flowers, taken before the early April spell of freezing weather. The "big snowstorm" predicted for last night/today stayed south of us this time. That's okay! It'll be much nicer for T's high school prom tonight.

Poof!

Just like that, 24 years have gone by. Yep... it was a windy day 24 years ago (March 12) that B and I were married. Were you there that day? T. surprised us with a cake in honor of the occasion. (Thanks, T!)

Spring break, which started the 16th for K and the 19th for T, also went poof! Classes start again tomorrow. I'm not quite sure what happened to the week.... mostly the usual stuff, though a friend of K's visited for awhile, and we did spend one day in the Little Apple shopping, and eating!

Did you ever go fast food drive-through hopping? What? Never? You know..... get cheeseburgers at one place, but they don't have onion rings so order them at the place next door, then you need ice cream which is better at the next location! If you're going to spend the money on junk food anyway, you might as well get what you like, right?!

Random photos I took of old buildings nearby.

We're ready to start a round of Nerts! Stop by and join us!
