Penguin Love and a Treasure Hunt

Penguins–what could be more black and white, which is the theme for this week's Scribble Picnic. Did this in rather of a hurry using a 4B pencil in my little sketchbook. I don't appreciate the imperfections of the paper showing up when scanned and enlarged, but can't put the blame for all of them on the paper!

I will be spending the next three days at our huge garage sale (with other families) as part of the annual U.S. Highway 36 Treasure Hunt (400 miles of antique and garage sales across Kansas!) I don't know how every year we manage to pull enough junk treasure out of the house to be able to keep doing this. Oh well, as long as it keeps going out! You can check out more black and white contributions to the picnic here.

  1. Your penguins are cute, Jolene. I didn't even enter my mind for the theme.

Good luck with the garage sale...400 miles of 'treasures' will keep a lot of people busy. Have fun!

    1. Thanks, Serena. The picnic ended up with a good variety of ideas! And the "treasure hunt" did keep many, many people busy either buying or selling or looking.

Sounds like you would be one of those customers we love to see walk through the door! ;-) Aside from the work of setting up and taking down, the sale was fun. And it was a success in that many, many items will no longer be taking up space in our house!

  3. Wow, I want to go to that sale. We have one here, but I would have to drive 2 hours to get to the start and it was a few months ago.

    Your penguins are adorable.

Maybe you can go to your sale another year. It's definitely the time to go when there are so many scheduled for the same days. It's crazy how far some people travel for this event!

Yes, you would absolutely find all kinds of "treasures". Some people travel in RVs or covered pickups or even pull trailers for this annual event!

  7. Your cute Penguin twins are very perfect for a black and white them. Yes, that enlarging does sometimes show things we don't want shown. I couldn't find yours.

  8. I actually like the paper textures/the imperfections, for me, sometimes the textures makes the work look, I don't know, more art-like?

your drawing is cute! they look like two children happily enjoying the day.

    have a lovely day.

The texture is okay; I just feel like I should have used a whiter, plain paper for this one I guess.

Guess you're not too likely to be traveling across the country the third weekend of September. Well, at least not until you retire... so, let me know and I'll see you then!

  10. I will never tire of penguins after the thrill of seeing up to 300,000 pairs at one time on my Antarctic expedition! They are the most adorable birds and your pair here are lovely.

    Happy Treasure Hunting.

  11. I have never heard of this before. Fascinating. Glad it won't be too hot for you then! Good luck.

As it is, I like the imperfections of paper as it adds another dimension of unexpected which can add interest too to such things as cute little penguins like these.

Thank you for you contribution and post, Jolene.

  12. Oh so cute ... you and Micheal were on the same page this week. I have a ton of stuff I am trying to get rid of. Too bad, I don't live in Kansas ... sounds like fun. Hope you sell lots :)

    1. Thanks, Andrea. Yes, I think these two must have been on their way to a penguin party!

Isn't it ridiculous the amount of stuff we accumulate, only to later wish it gone? The sale was fun (and tiring), but most importantly many, many items found new homes or were donated to the local thrift store.
