La Puerta

I spent most of yesterday in a classroom as a substitute teacher. The class? High school Spanish! Do I speak Spanish? Not much, though I have learned some basics through an app on my phone. Fortunately, the school is linked to another in the district for distance learning, so the aide at the other school was able to lead anything that actually required knowing the language! Keeping order and handing out quizzes at my end of the district were my main requirements.  There were some items in the classroom labeled with vocabulary cards, including... the door! Perfect, since that is what I needed to draw for this week's Scribble Picnic, and I ended up with enough free time to draw it in my sketchbook!

Open the door to drawings by others in the picnic here.

  1. ah, spanish class, I remember I didn't like it at all and now the only spanish I know is "hola" and that's if I remember it at all. the door, la puerta, that is, a new spanish word for me but I'll probably won't remember. lovely sketch & that is how exactly I remember some of the school doors.

    have a lovely day.

    1. I took German in high school, but unfortunately most of that vocabulary is long gone for me. Thanks, and yep, it seems to be a pretty standard classroom door.

  2. Ah, I would know that was a school door without you even saying because of those bricks!!!

  3. Lovely work on your door sketch, Jolene! I loved learning German in high school but most of what I learned has escaped me now too. I do still remember a few phrases but that's about it. :)

    1. Danke, Serena!
"Use it or lose it" is apparently all too true with many of us and our foreign language learning.

  4. Su puerta es muy bien. (And that's about all I've got after 4 years of H S and college Spanish!)

  5. I was a substitute teacher for many years but I was not brave enough to sub in a high school. And I don't think I ever did a foreign language either. Glad to see that you got some time to sketch during your day there. That's a real positive outcome!

    1. It took me many years before I dared sub anything beyond grade school classes, Lorraine! But when I did, it usually ended up being much easier than with the younger students, who tend to need so much more almost constant interaction. (Of course it might be a different story if I were in a large school.)

  6. It brings back many memories of being in school and teaching. That door! What a great opportunity.

    1. I'm assuming those are good memories for you, Janis. Did you teach art classes? If only all students would appreciate the opportunities behind classroom doors!

  7. I thought I left a comment....must have been a "Senior" moment. But I love your school door as it looks just like the doors I remember from High School.
Great drawing and good for you. Bet you are a great Sub.

    1. :-) Sometimes I type out comments, but then I think I forget to hit "Publish" before moving on!
Apparently this is a standard issue school door, recognized by many.
Thanks, Wanda, I try anyway, and have certainly had enough years' experience to have no excuse not to be!

  8. Sorry to be visiting everyone so much later than I would normally!

Oh this really made me smile, Jolene! What a great idea! Love it and the story behind it. Thank you!

BTW, if you haven't seen it yet, I did go ahead and add another post, explained the spaceship door's bumper stickers. :)

    1. It's nice you took the time to stop, with your life as it's been recently.

    1. Thank you, Alexandra! Subbing for Spanish is actually not much different than any of the other classes, which I don't necessarily know much about either. As long as the teacher leaves some good plans and the students are cooperative, it's not usually too bad!
